In Austria, all the members of a fire department get a SMS in case of an emergency. The server side of the emergency assistant runs on an ASP.NET server, which is connected to a GSM modem. The modem receives the SMS in case of an emergency, analyses it and notifies all the iPads located in the fire trucks of the department. The application then automatically starts the navigation to the location of the emergency and provides additional details about the type of emergency. As soon as the trucks arrive at the emergency site, they get an overview of points-of-interest in the surrounding area (e.g. water hydrants, public buildings). Each POI can have a description and multiple attachments – e.g. a PDF containing the blueprint of a public building, pictures how to reach the nearest water supply, etc.. All the information is stored directly on the iPads, as there’s often no internet available at remote emergency locations. Whenever the information on the server-side is updated, push notifications will be send to all devices and update the iPads as soon as they are connected to the departments WiFi again.
